BACKGROUND

Brite Side Industries is a NCTC Inc. enterprise developed to generate training and re-skilling opportunities for residents in the Noosa region and link these to a long-term, self-sustaining business venture. Brite Side Industries diverts and sells from landfill and potential landfill, items of a nature that can be repaired, modified or recycled.

The implementation of Brite Side Industries coincided with the implementation of Noosa Shire Council's Waste Management Strategy and involves the harmonisation of the needs of people who are disadvantaged in access to employment with the skills, expertise and environmentally-friendly resources that abound in the Noosa area. The South East Queensland Economic Development Strategy served as a guide for enterprise planning and implementation.

The Brite Side Industries concept was developed in consultation with nationally acknowledged waste management and recycling business development specialists, regional economic development agencies and local government. Over 500 community organisations, individuals and businesses in our community were consulted throughout the development of the enterprise. Financial, in-kind and business development support was provided by individuals, community organisations, local business, recycling and value-adding consultants, Noosa Shire Council, the Sunshine Coast Local Area Consultative Committee and State Government agencies.

Brite Side Industries has been operational for 10 years and currently employs 3 permanent and 8 casual staff working over a 7 day week. All Brite Side staff are employed through job retraining programs designed in partnership with the Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Regional Council to give participants real work opportunities in a supportive environment and provide a range of skills from waste management through recycling, horticulture and retail training. Numerous participants have benefited from training at Brite Side Industries through the State Governments Community Jobs Program – Work Placements, First Start Traineeship projects, Work for the Dole activities and volunteering. Many have continued employment at Brite Side while others have gone onto new careers elsewhere having benefited from the increased confidence, motivation and self-esteem provided by being in paid work.

Brite Side Industries have been very fortunate to receive assistance from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund in 2000 to purchase our Isuzu Truck, in 2004 and 2007 to purchase a tailgate conventional loader and forklift, which have been greatly beneficial to staff in moving large items around the facility. Sunshine Coast Regional Council is very supportive of Brite Side Industries and continually provide support in both a financial capacity and in training and employment opportunities.
